Stardew Valley: Beginner’s Guide to Farming and Adventure
Getting Started: Your First Day
You inherit your grandfather’s old farm in Stardew Valley with nothing but a few parsnip seeds and a rusty hoe. Your first task is to clear a small patch of soil, plant your parsnips, and water them daily. Parsnips take only 4 days to grow and sell for 35g each, making them the perfect starter crop.
Visit Pierre’s General Store to buy additional seeds. The most profitable spring crops for beginners are:
| Crop | Seed Cost | Sell Price | Growth Time | Profit/Day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parsnip | 20g | 35g | 4 days | 3.75g |
| Potato | 50g | 80g | 6 days | 5.0g |
| Strawberry | 100g | 120g | 8 days | 20.83g |
| Green Bean | 60g | 40g | 10 days | 7.0g |
Strawberries are the standout but are only available at the Egg Festival (13th Spring). Save your gold for them.
Farming Mechanics and Crop Planning
Farming is the backbone of your income. Each crop requires tilled soil, fertilizer (optional), and daily watering until harvest. Upgrading your watering can at Clint’s blacksmith lets you water more tiles at once.
Quality matters: crops can be regular, silver, or gold quality, determined by your Farming skill level and fertilizer. Gold-quality crops sell for 50% more. Basic Fertilizer increases the chance of quality crops while Speed-Gro reduces growth time by 10%.
Plan your season carefully — most crops die when the season changes. Summer crops like Blueberries (13 days, regrows) and Melons (12 days) are excellent choices. Fall favorites include Cranberries (regrows) and Pumpkins.
Mining and Combat in the Mines
The mine entrance is northeast of Pelican Town, blocked by rocks that require a stronger pickaxe. Inside are 120 floors of increasing difficulty. Each 5th floor has an elevator that lets you skip previously reached depths.
Bring weapons, food, and bombs. The basic sword and pickaxe won’t cut it past floor 40. Upgrade your sword at the Adventurer’s Guild. Key ores appear at specific depths:
- Copper: floors 1-39
- Iron: floors 40-79
- Gold: floors 80-119
- Iridium: floors 120+ (Skull Cavern)
Smelt ores into bars at the furnace (25 copper ore + 1 coal = 1 copper bar). Bars are used for tool upgrades, which reduce energy cost and increase efficiency.

Fishing: Relaxation and Profit
Fishing is challenging at first but becomes one of the most reliable early income sources. The green bar mini-game requires practice — start at the mountain lake where carp are easy catches. Cast into deeper water for higher quality fish.
Each fish has preferred seasons, weather, and time windows. Spring fish like the Legend (spring, rain, mountain lake) sell for 5,000g and give +2 Fishing XP. The Training Rod (25g from Willy) makes casting easier for beginners.
Relationships and Marriage
Building friendships with the 12 bachelors and bachelorettes unlocks cooking recipes, heart events, and perks. Talk to them daily, gift loved items on birthdays:
- Abigail: Amethyst, Pumpkin
- Haley: Sunflower, Coconut
- Sebastian: Frozen Tear, Void Egg
- Emily: Emerald, Cloth
Marriage requires a 10-heart relationship and a Mermaid’s Pendant purchased from the Old Mariner for 5,000g. Your spouse will help with farm chores and provide occasional gifts.
Community Center Bundles
Completing Pantry bundles unlocks the greenhouse, giving you year-round growing capability. Focus on the Spring Crops bundle (parsnips, green beans, cauliflower, potatoes) to unlock Speed-Gro for all future seasons.
The most overlooked bundle is the Quality Crops bundle — save gold-star produce throughout the year. Animal bundles unlock a barn and coop, enabling mayonnaise, cheese, and truffle production.
Completing all bundles restores the Community Center and unlocks the movie theater, a delightful endgame destination.
Stardew Valley rewards patience and exploration. There’s no wrong way to play — whether you optimize every gold piece or spend days fishing by the river, the valley welcomes you.
